No Password Required® — Development & Market Access for First Features

PLEASE NOTE: The programme is open to UK-based, early-career Global Majority-led production companies, or producers preparing to establish one, who are working towards their first feature as lead producer. We especially welcome producers based outside London. Travel and Accommodation will be covered for successful applicants based outside London, in the UK regions.

No Password Required is Supported by the BFI National Lottery Creative Challenge Fund, awarding National Lottery Good Cause funding.

What's on offer

  • A four-month advanced development and access-to-market programme for ten selected projects.

  • Creative and commercial support designed to turn strong feature scripts into professionally packaged, market-ready projects.

  • Support includes script consultancy, script breakdown, production scheduling, a detailed production budget and top sheet, finance plan development, sales estimates and chain of title guidance.

  • A four-day residential development intensive in London, tailored one-to-one consultancies with specialist industry professionals, and three hours of support from an Industry Champion.

  • Curated one-to-one meetings with international sales agents and distributors at Access to Market Day.

  • Participation fees for both the producer and writer are covered.

  • Travel and accommodation are covered for selected participants based outside London.

What they are looking for

  • Live-action narrative fiction feature projects with a developed screenplay.

  • Projects preparing to move towards finance and the international marketplace.

  • Features with production budgets of £3 million or less.

  • Projects where the lead producer holds the rights to produce the screenplay.

  • Projects that have secured no more than 40% of production finance, excluding the UK tax credit.

Who can apply

  • UK-based, early-career Global Majority-led production companies, or producers preparing to establish one.

  • Lead producers from a Global Majority background who are working towards their first feature as lead producer.

  • Applicants must be UK citizens or legal residents for tax purposes.

  • Applicants must be over 18 and not in full-time education.

  • Applicants must be available to attend the four-day residential intensive and Access to Market Day in person.

  • Producers based outside London are especially encouraged to apply.

What you need to include in your SMASH Pitch

Your SMASH Snapshot must include at minimum:

  • Logline

  • Format; Genre; Setting; Runtime

  • Brief Biog of key creatives

  • Synopsis with all major plot points — set up; inciting incident; rising conflict; mid story twist; crisis; climax and resolution.

  • Creative vision

  • Visual references (poster/concept art optional)

  • Budget range

  • Cast ideas (that would work with your budget)

  • Comparables (recent TV or Film at your budget level that capture a similar feeling or energy)

Any projects submitted without this information will not be accepted.
